Story

"THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL"

France at the end of the 18th century—after several years from the French Revolution, in which the downtrodden common men and women rose up for freedom and sent many a noble to the guillotines of the Revolutionary Government. English aristocrat Sir Percival Blakeney [Percy] (Yuzuru Kurenai), opposed to the reign of terror, was hiding his true identity to assist falsely arrested nobles flee France, calling himself the “Scarlet Pimpernel,” after a star-shaped red flower in England. Chauvelin (Makoto Rei), the chief agent of the Committee of Public Safety of the Revolutionary Government, was hunting for the Scarlet Pimpernel to reveal his identity.
As all of this is happening, the star actress of Comédie Française, Marguerite St. Just (Airi Kisaki), who is to be married to Percy, takes her last bow before leaving for England. On stage, Marguerite criticizes the Revolution Government with Jacobin leader Maximilien Robespierre (Hiroki Nanami) watching from the balcony, which leads to Chauvelin ordering the closure of the theater. Chauvelin then confronts Marguerite to force her to disclose the Republican Marquis de St. Cyr’s whereabouts in exchange for permission to reopen the theater. While the two have had shared ambitions for the revolution in the past, Marguerite has already abandoned the Republicans along with their policies that conflicted with her ideals. She brushes off Chauvelin initially, but then passes on information about St. Cyr’s whereabouts on the condition that they would not hurt the Marquis.
In England, the wedding of Percy and Marguerite is a spectacular event attended by all of London society. It is at this happiest moment of his life, that Percy receives a message informing him of the execution of Marquis de St. Cyr, an ally of the Scarlet Pimpernel. He also learns that it was Marguerite who passed on information about the Marquis. After confirming that the truth of the matter, Percy is torn between his love and revulsion for his wife.
Percy, whose greatest ambition was to rescue Louis Charles, the late king Louis XVI’s son, eventually reveals his identity to his trusted companions and seeks their help. Percy, still concealing his true identity from Marguerite, crosses the Strait of Dover and heads for Paris with the comrades-in-arms of the Scarlet Pimpernel.
