“The Sun in the Last Days of the Shogunate”
Released in 1957, “The Sun in the Last Days of the Shogunate” was a masterpiece from the talented director Yuzo Kawashima. A brilliant gem in the history of Japanese film, “The Sun in the Last Days of the Shogunate” focuses on the classic tale of “The Detention of Saheiji” while combining aspects from such classic stories as “Double Suicide in Shinagawa,” “Three Written Vows,” and “Choices.” Set in the historical brothel of Sagamiya in Shinagawa, the tale wittily depicts the various social events that occur within the brothel’s walls.
The story begins in a brothel at the end of the Edo period. With not even a cent to his name, Saheiji whiles the night away enjoying riotous pleasures with a prostitute named O-some. The next morning, the carefree Saheiji begins working at the brothel to repay his debt. Saheiji begins as a clerk but soon uses his inherent courage and wit to resolve the many disputes that occur at the brothel while carefully putting away the money he is paid in appreciation. As time slips by, Saheiji becomes quite the popular figure in the red-light district, even befriending Shinsaku Takasugi and his followers who use Sagamiya as a meeting place to draw up plans to expel foreigners from Japan, but changes lie in wait just around the corner... Seina Sagiri and the Snow Troupe rise to the challenge of bringing this human comedy interlaced with melancholy and swelling with the raw energy of life to the stage.
This “song & dance show” presents various keywords beginning with “S.” This performance delivers a number of “show scenes” depicting the charm of the Snow Troup starring the splendid show star Seina Sagiri.
This performance will be the debut performance of Takarazuka Grand Theater’s 103rd troupe of first-year performers.
