It is 1938 in Europe, and the continent is draped in darkness on the eve of World War II. Refugees from war-torn areas and asylum seekers from different countries have begun gathering in Paris, where for the moment the light still shines. Among them is Ravic, a surgeon who has fled torture at a Nazi concentration camp in Germany in exchange for self-exile. He places himself at the sole place of refuge for asylum-seekers, the Hotel International, where he makes a living by practicing medicine as an unlicensed physician.
In the small hours on a rainy night, Ravic goes to the Pont de l'Alma, a bridge spanning the Seine River, where he happens upon a woman who is about to throw herself into the water: Joan Madou. She has come to Paris from Italy. Joan says she was accompanied by a man who was staying at the same hotel with her, but he has since passed away. Joan is a mentally unbalanced woman, but Ravic lends her his help by asking a friend, Boris Morosov, the doorman at the Scheherazade night club, to take care of her. Over the following three weeks, Ravic never comes to check in on Joan. Perhaps, recognizing the harsh reality that he is an exile with no future, he is hesitant to love. Meanwhile, Joan becomes a popular singer at the club, where she awaits Ravic's return. After three weeks, he finally steps through the club's door. Joan says she was given a new hope and will to live by Ravic. And upon seeing her again, Ravic is once more enchanted. In this city where the dark shadow of war creeps closer, Ravic and Joan passionately fall in love. But that is not the end of their story...
