"Genroku Baroque Rock"
Edo, home to a sea of people and scattering cherry blossoms. In an age when the most advanced technology is assembled in this bustling city, it thrives on a baroque culture, swarming with talent and achievements.
Once a retainer of the Ako domain, the serious but kind clockmaker, Chronosuke, now spends his days quietly in Edo. There, he leads the unassuming life of a poor man until one day he accidentally invents a clock that can rewind time. With that, his whole life turns upside down. Using his new invention to win large sums of money through gambling, soon his old self becomes almost unrecognizable. Although Chronosuke should be on top of the world, for some reason there is one thing his clock keeps getting wrong. His luck always runs out when it comes to the ladies. Through all his misfortune, there’s always a woman, watching him struggle with a mysterious smile. She calls herself Kira, and owns the gambling den he frequents. Getting more and more bewitched by her beauty as time goes on, Chronosuke falls in obsessive love.
One day, a visitor calls on him. Kuranosuke, the chief retainer of the late Ako daimyo comes to him with a call to arms. He needs support in avenging his master, Takuminokami, who committed seppuku due to an incident between him and Kozukenosuke. But by the time of this visit, there is no trace of the sincere man Chronosuke used to be. Hearing how Kuranosuke laments that he cannot turn back time to fix things, Chronosuke’s heart is about to break as he clutches the clock to himself. However, what he finds out next changes everything. It has come to light that Kozukenosuke has an illegitimate child by the name of Kira...
This is a historical-fantastical musical set in the Genroku period; inspired by the popular tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin, with fictional elements blending into a true story. A universally beloved tale with a new spin, filled with romance and fantastic elements as it comes alive on the Takarazuka stage in our modern times.
Love blooms in Edo as Chronosuke and Kira’s time finally synchronize. Ticking away in a baroque setting, a clock Romanesque.
This play will serve as director Takaya Tani’s debut show in the Takarazuka Grand Theater.
The year 2021 marks the hundredth anniversary of Flower Troupe. With the increasing demand for more Takarazuka shows, Flower and Moon, the first two troupes were established in 1921. During the same year, Flower Troupe performed on stage for the first time.
