It is the Kan’ei era (1624-1644) in Japan. The story starts at Tokei-ji Temple in Kamakura, a nunnery forbidding men to enter. There is a martial artist entering into the nunnery secretly, guided by a famous Zen monk Takuan. This man is Yagyu Jubei, the one-eyed great swordsman. Despite being the first son of Yagyu Munenori who is the sword instructor to the Tokugawa shogun family, Jubei dislikes the rigidity of work at Edo Castle, and instead spends all his time traveling around the country honing his skills in swordsmanship.
Jubei’s visit to Tokei-ji Temple is due to a request he received to thwart the imminent reprisals against the remaining Hori clan’s women… It all started when Hori Mondo, a chief retainer of the Aizu Domain, stood against his tyrannical lord Kato Akinari and fled the domain; meanwhile, the women of the Hori clan sought shelter at Tokei-ji Temple that is recognized as a government-approved temple in which women seeking divorces can take refuge. Dissatisfied with just executing Mondo, Akinari attempted to have his men enter the women-only temple forcibly to capture the Hori women. It was really unforgivable to Tenjuin, who’s also known as Sen-hime, the wife of the late Toyotomi Hideyori. Tenjuin had lived a life controlled by men; she therefore had been supporting Tokei-ji Temple that serves as the last bastion of hope for many abused women. Thoroughly convinced that vengeance must be delivered by a woman’s hand, Tenjuin ordered Jubei to instruct the Hori women the skills to revenge… That is why Jubei is now at Tokei-ji Temple.
Jubei instructs the Hori women in the ways of military strategy day after day. Owing to his relentless trainings, the women acquire the fighting techniques. Along with Jubei, the Hori women wage fierce battles against enemies, including Urushido Koshichiro who is a member of Akinari’s fighting force called the Seven Spears of Aizu. At last, Jubei and the women leave Edo for Aizu to have a showdown, where Akinari is ruling.
Waiting for them in Aizu is Ashina Dohaku, who is the head of the Ashina clan in the service of the Aizu Domain. The mysterious Dohaku has the ambition of gaining control over the domain. Using his daughter Yura, who is Lord Akinari’s concubine, Dohaku intends to have Akinari in the palm of his hand in order to revive the Ashina clan which once ruled Aizu. Can Jubei and the Hori women defeat their villainous opponents appearing one after another? Jubei’s splendid swordplay, like a flash of lightning, has just begun.
"More Dandyism!"
The “Dandyism” series explores a theme eternal to Takarazuka: the aesthetics of the otokoyaku. “More Dandyism!” is the third in this lineup, following in the footsteps of the original “Dandyism!” that was performed in 1995, headlined by Flower Troupe top star Miki Maya. “Neo Dandyism!” revisited the topic in 2006, with the Wataru Kozuki-led Star Troupe.
Immerse yourself in this classic Takarazuka revue, abundant with both glitter and grace! The colorful and romantic atmosphere of the show will accentuate the charm of the current top star, Makoto Rei, while also showcasing the energetic charm of the troupe members.
