Story

"THE GREAT GATSBY"

The story is set in America during the 1920s. There is an arrestingly luxurious estate in West Egg, a new residential area on Long Island in the suburbs of New York City. The mansion is owned by a mysterious wealthy man named Jay Gatsby. Nightly, he throws extravagant parties open to anyone where champagne and wine are lavishly served despite Prohibition. But none of the party guests enjoying the revelry know who Gatsby really is or what he looks like.

Nick Carraway, who recently moved into a small house next door to Gatsby’s mansion, cannot hide his shock to see these dazzling parties. On the morning after one party, Nick brings himself to speak to Gatsby standing on the jetty that adjoins the mansion’s garden and staring across the bay. Nick asks if there is someone in East Egg on the other shore, Gatsby replies that "the love of his life" lives there. Nick then mentions that his second cousin Daisy Buchanan and Tom Buchanan, who is Daisy’s husband and Nick’s classmate from college, live in East Egg. Nick’s words abruptly change Gatsby’s countenance, because Daisy is just the one whom Gatsby has always had feeling for. Gatsby is excited as he finally finds the bond that will connect him with her.
Tom, who comes from a rich family with social prestige, and Daisy live a wealthy life in East Egg that would be the envy of anyone. In fact, however, Tom has a mistress. Being vaguely aware of her husband’s infidelity, Daisy feels empty. In a conversation with Nick whom she has not seen for a long time, Daisy is disturbed to learn that his new next-door neighbor is a man named Gatsby.

What happened between Gatsby and Daisy in the past? With Nick’s help who learns the whole story of their past, the two finally have a long-waited reunion. In the five years since their separation, Gatsby sometimes took risks to gain his current social position in order to get back in love with Daisy. Having a mansion across the bay from Daisy’s estate, keeping to host lavish parties open to anyone… Everything Gatsby has done is all in the hope of re-encountering Daisy. Daisy is touched by Gatsby’s deep love for her, and she feels a rush of excitement as five years ago. They cannot turn back the clock but start over… Gatsby dreams of a bright future with Daisy, but….
