Story

“Boiled Doyle on the Toil Trail”

The story takes place in the late 19th century in London, where newspapers and magazines are the main mass media for the general public, and they are in fierce competition with one another to sell more copies.
In times like these, there is a man who is both a doctor and a writer-neither a first-rate doctor nor a famous writer. His name is Arthur Conan Doyle.
Upper Wimpole Street is a stone’s throw from the heart of London. It is where Doyle has his practice. He is the only one in the practice now. Sitting at his desk, seemingly unconcerned that he has not seen a single patient until 4:00 p.m. as usual, Doyle is engrossed in writing something on a piece of manuscript paper. Just then, the doorbell rings. He prepares himself for the arrival of a patient, but it is his wife, Louisa, who is standing at the door. The latest work Doyle has been diligently writing is a British historical novel of which he is very proud. And yet, all of his manuscripts are returned to him by magazine publishers, never even opened or read. Angry at the magazines for churning out trashy and cheap fiction that appeals to the masses, Doyle insists that he can write something more interesting if he sets his mind to do it. Encouraged by Louisa, who assures him that he can do it, Doyle makes up his mind to write an exciting story no one else can write.
Wondering what to write to attract the public, Doyle wanders around the city at night, where he comes across Lord Balfour, a Conservative Member of Parliament, and his friends being attacked by a gang of thugs. Doyle saves them with his impressive boxing skills. Lord Balfour invites Doyle to a gathering of the Society for Psychical Research of which the lord and his friends are members, and where Doyle witnesses paranormal phenomena such as spiritual mediumship by Estelle Roberts and hypnosis by Professor Milo de Meyer. As a token of their friendship, Lord Balfour presents Doyle with a fountain pen that originally belonged to Professor Meyer. The fountain pen is referred to as a magic pen and is said to have been used for the experiment in automatic writing. Although he remains skeptical, Doyle takes the pen home.
The next day, Doyle tries out the magic pen… and nothing happens… When he is disappointed that he is not a psychic after all, the pen suddenly glows and floats up in the air! As Doyle freaks out, a stranger appears before him. The man introduces himself as Sherlock Holmes, the protagonist of Doyle’s previous novel, “A Study in Scarlet”. How come a fictional character, who is supposed to exist only in the book, appears before him? Holmes picks up the pen and motivates Doyle, who is still confused about what is going on, by suggesting to start writing a new story together.
Guided by Holmes, Doyle completes their first collaborative work, “A Scandal in Bohemia”. Advised by Holmes again, he submits this piece to the “worst-selling” magazine, “The Strand Magazine”. “A Scandal in Bohemia” is immediately accepted for publication by the editor-in-chief Herbert, who has been looking for a serialized story that will become the magazine’s centerpiece.
The publication of “A Scandal in Bohemia” in the July 1891 issue of “The Strand Magazine” is the beginning of the Sherlock Holmes series. With each subsequent issue in August, September, and October, the protagonist Holmes becomes more and more popular, creating a great sensation that completely changes Doyle’s life.
Gaining wealth, fame, and status as a writer thanks to “Holmes”, Doyle decides to close his practice to become a full-time writer. He believes the time has come to write a historical novel he has always wanted. No more Holmes!
However, the Sherlock Holmes series has worked the public into an unstoppable frenzy. Some fans have even come to believe that Holmes really exists and that Doyle is merely his representative. Doyle is tormented by the fact that he has to keep writing Sherlock Holmes stories while he has no desire to write any more, and he gets caught up in fear that his life is about to be dominated by Holmes. Louisa, unable to stand by and watch her husband’s life being controlled by Holmes, finally takes action to save him. She makes a proposal, but it is so outrageous…
Can Doyle and Louisa get their lives back?
