“The Wand’rin’ Stars”
The scene is Brighton, a beach resort area in the southeast part of England, in the 1960s. The young people in the blue-collar class are divided into two groups, the Mods, who wear slim three-button suits and enjoy dance music, and the Rockers, who style their hair in pompadours, sport leather jackets and love rock’n’roll. The two are in a turf war.
One night, Alex, leader of the Mods, and his friends start a brawl with the Rockers, led by Leslie, a childhood friend of Alex. The battle is heated and neither side gives an inch. A police officer breaks it up midway, and Alex takes off on his beloved Vespa.
At the same time, at the Hotel Harbor International, the family who runs the hotel is waiting in vain to meet the fiancée of Cynthia, granddaughter of the hotel’s president. Suddenly, there is a sound of screeching brakes and then a collision. Alex has been fleeing the police, loses control and crashes into the side of the hotel. As he is losing consciousness, he tells the people around him his name. By chance, it is the same name as Cynthia’s fiancée. The onlookers had been wary of this young man who caused the accident, but now they suddenly take him to be the bridegroom they’ve been waiting for.
Alex remains unconscious until the next morning. When Cynthia finds out he knows a lot about how cars work, she begins to gleefully tell him about her love of car racing. It turns out that she herself is a highly skilled cart racer. Alex encourages her in her goal to get into racing. Until that point, everyone has been trying her to discourage her dream, but now the straightforward words of Alex make their way into her heart, and she feels moved by more than just car racing.
Alex realizes that he has been mistaken for Cynthia’s fiancée, and he leaves the hotel without saying good-bye to her. He is certain they will never cross paths again because she lives in a completely different world. It is then, though, that Cynthia’s brother, Timothy, who knows who Alex really is, asks him to pretend to be her fiancée until the real one shows up. Timothy takes custody of Alex’s Vespa ─ the one that had caused the crash at the hotel ─ forcing Alex to continue seeing Cynthia.
Alex and Cynthia were born into different social classes and heading in completely different directions. They should never have met, but now that they have, Alex feels himself moving back towards a dream that he gave up on long ago. Meanwhile, Alex and Cynthia’s relationship moves forward with the speed of a car race! How will it end?
