Story

“A Chronicle of Waning Fortune”

The story is set in the final years of the Heian era. In the wake of his victory in the Heiji Rebellion, Taira no Kiyomori, head of the Heike clan, is appointed Chief Minister, becoming the first samurai to attain the highest office in the imperial government.
Thus, the Heike clan reaches the peak of power. In the shadows of it all, though, the Imperial Court and other samurai throughout the country grow more and more dissatisfied.

Kiyomori’s favorite son is Tomomori, who is intelligent and a skilled warrior. It is not long before the father puts all of his trust and expectations into Tomomori. He expects him to support his elder brother, Munemori, who is too gentle to be a warrior, and lead the Heike clan. These expectations instill in Tomomori a strong sense of duty as well as a terrible fear that he must never betray his father’s hopes. Tomomori, his culturally refined younger brother Shigehira, and cousin Noritsune, who is considered the most valiant of the Heike, are the young samurai who will lead the next generation. They have no idea, however, that they will live to see the collapse of their clan.
On the orders of his father, Tomomori takes Akiko, a daughter of the Kazan’in Fujiwara family, as his wife. When the two first meet, Akiko abruptly prophecies the downfall of the Heike. Tomomori is dumbfounded as Akiko remains steadfast in her belief of these words, even in the presence of Heike leader Kiyomori. At the same time, the youth is drawn to her strength. For her part, Akiko senses in Tomomori talents beyond those of anyone else in his clan, and she agrees to the match. Before long, the two have a child they name Tomoakira. So begins the happiest period in the lives of Tomomori and Akiko.
As time goes by, voices objecting to the tyrannical ways of the Heike grow louder. The emperor decrees that the clan be overthrown, and finally, the entire Genji clan and its retainers, led by Minamoto no Yoritomo and Kiso Yoshinaka, moves into action. In response, Kiyomori commands Shigehira to quell the temples and shrines on the Genji side. For the sake of a Heike victory, Shigehira has all of the shrines, temples and homes of commonfolk in the south burned to the ground. In the aftermath he is harrowed by regret for his actions.
Before long, Kiyomori suffers a burning fever ─ perhaps a divine punishment? ─ and dies in agony. Now without their leader, the Heike clan falls into a state of confusion. Munemori becomes the new chief, and wrestles with how he should lead. In the meanwhile, Kiso Yoshinaka raises an army in the Shinano region, and this indomitable force takes power in Hokuriku. The Heike troops move in to suppress this movement, but suffers a definitive defeat at Kurikara Pass. Shigehira asserts that the only path ahead is a peace settlement with the Genji. Tomomori, however, insists that the order his father has established must not be relinquished. He proposes that the clan temporarily retreat to the western provinces, taking with them the emperor and the Three Sacred Treasures of the Imperial Family. The clan is distraught over this move to leave the capital of Kyoto, but Tomomori vows to take complete responsibility for their misfortune. Noritsune, for his part, has always respected Tomomori as an elder brother and he is determined to follow him wherever fate may lead. Akiko, too, can see no path other than following Tomomori, their two children in tow, and she bids her father a final farewell.
The Heike clan, with each member wanting nothing more than to protect it, sets off. Just as a full moon reaches its zenith and then grows smaller with each passing day, so goes the proud Heike clan, the most glorious samurai family of all time, as it travels towards the west and its ultimate demise.
