Story

“A Chronicle of Waning Fortune”

The twilight of the Heian period, late twelfth-century. The Heike clan, comprised of members of the Taira family, enjoys unprecedented prosperity as a warrior family. They dominate the capital, Kyoto, under the leadership of Taira no Kiyomori.
Taira no Tomomori, a young general unwaveringly favored by his father Kiyomori, is raised to shape the future of the Heike alongside his younger brother Shigehira and cousin Noritsune. Kiyomori’s absolute trust and boundless expectations gradually take root in Tomomori, instilling in him a sense that he is destined to lead the Heike. Simultaneously, he develops an anxiety that he must never betray that fate and his father’s expectations.
In time, Tomomori takes a gifted court lady called Akiko as his wife. She is the daughter of the Kazan-in Fujiwara family and carries the serene presence of the moon within her. All of a sudden, she foretells the fall of the Heike to Tomomori.
Initially, Tomomori dismisses her words as nonsense. However, when Kiyomori falls ill, her prophecy becomes reality, and the prestige of the Heike fades away like sand slipping through his fingers.
Tomomori races to secure the survival of the Heike. Shigehira rejects war and strives to rescue the people. Noritsune believes that his sword represents true loyalty. As the tide of war turns against them, the three men’s convictions collide, and each chooses his own fate.
At last, they arrive at their fated destination: Dan-no-ura. Beneath the moon that waxes in deep blue and then wanes, unfolds a final tale of glory and pride, love and loss.
With Taira no Tomomori, the last commander of the Heike, as the central figure, this drama is the record of a life inscribed in the azure moon, revealing who he becomes at the end of all vows and losses, burdened by his father’s shadow.
This performance will serve as director Asuka Kumakura’s debut show in the Takarazuka Grand Theater.
