The story takes place in 1832 Paris. France is still controlled by the aristocracy who keeps holding power and the notably rising bourgeoisie, even after the upheaval period of the revolution. The hedonistic and possessive aristocrats let their patronizing artists show off their performances or works at the salons held night after night, and the artists compete with each other to achieve fame with their own skills and charms.
The noble ladies are gathering in the salon hosted by Marquise Le Vayer tonight just to see Franz Liszt, a young piano virtuoso who has taken the Parisian salons by storm with his handsome features as well as superb piano technique. Any salon featuring Liszt is packed with ladies, and he immediately captivates the audience with his passionate performance. Liszt is now in his prime, which everyone is envious of. But meanwhile, his rival and friend Frederic Chopin is concerned that Liszt is losing his true self as his popularity grows. Chopin shows Liszt a critique. Written under the pseudonym of Daniel Stern, the article points out the essence of what Liszt should look to, instead of praising him. Upon finding out who Daniel Stern is, Liszt visits the critic: Countess Marie d'Agoult.
Countess Marie d'Agoult, who is regarded as the star of Parisian society, lives in a loveless marriage to her husband, Count d'Agoult. She is secretly engaged in writing activities under a man’s name, as if to seek for the meaning of her existence. Having not been her true self in social circles, Marie senses that Liszt carries the pain inside as she does. Liszt is overjoyed at meeting a woman whom he can share his deepest feelings with. He realizes that it is not his true self "Liszt Ferenc" but the created image of Franz Liszt that is wanted in the city. Shortly afterwards, he elopes with Marie.
Thus their "Years of Pilgrimage" has begun. The two go to Switzerland, far away from Paris. They regain the joy of living as just Ferenc and Marie. But their happy days will not last long…
