The setting is New York City circa 1948, and the city is bursting with energy. Sky Masterson is a big-shot gambler, just back from a huge win in Las Vegas. Upon his arrival, his friend Nathan Detroit proposes a bet. Nathan is the most successful craps runner in the Broadway district, and he has been engaged to Miss Adelaide for the past fourteen years. He spends more time running craps than he does on her. Now though, he is struggling to put a deposit on a good place to hold his games. He decides to make the money he needs by betting Sky he can’t convince any girl ─ specifically one of Nathan’s choice ─ to go with him to Havana. Sky is a confident playboy, but soon regrets agreeing to the bet because the girl Nathan picks for him is Sarah, known to all as a sergeant in the Salvation Army staunchly devoted to her calling.
Sky heads for the Salvation Army mission, where he meets Sarah who is despondent that her talks are failing to win converts. Sky tells her that if she’ll go to dinner with him in Havana, he’ll provide a dozen sinners to sit in her pews. Sarah turns Sky down flat, but eventually gives in because he might be able to help her keep the mission going.
Sky finally succeeds in taking Sarah off with him. In Havana, with its uninhibited atmosphere, Sarah finds herself falling for Sky. Sky finds this new Sarah adorable. Back in New York in the middle of the night, the city is quiet and the two open up to each other.
The happiness of the two lovers, though, is short lived. They arrive back at the mission only to find gamblers running out of it who’ve been playing craps games run by Nathan. While Sarah was gone, Nathan took advantage of the empty mission to make money gambling. Sky insists that he had nothing to do with the whole thing, but Sarah refuses to listen. What will this misunderstanding mean for their new-found love?
